St. Martin of Tours Church traces its roots to the original chapel built by pioneer Martin Murphy in the South Valley (now San Martin) around 1853, named after his patron saint, St. Martin of Tours, with ties to early Silicon Valley history and even César Chávez; the parish later moved its historic building to Mayfair for Our Lady of Guadalupe. The current St. Martin of Tours parish in San Jose developed separately, establishing its own presence and school (opened 1955) to serve the growing Catholic community in the area
